How is an hourly paycheck calculated?

Regular pay is your hourly rate multiplied by regular hours. Overtime pay uses the hourly rate, overtime hours, and the selected overtime multiplier. Gross pay combines those amounts with other taxable earnings.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime rate is hourly rate × overtime multiplier. For example, $20 at 1.5× is $30 per overtime hour, so five overtime hours add $150. Overtime wages generally do not have a special separate “overtime tax rate”; the larger paycheck can change withholding.

What taxes come out of a paycheck?

This estimator includes federal income tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, and optional simplified state and local estimates. Actual payroll systems may use additional rules and employee-specific information.

What is federal income tax withholding?

The federal estimate uses the 2026 IRS Publication 15-T Percentage Method worksheet structure and supports common Form W-4 inputs. It is not an official IRS calculator. See IRS Publication 15-T, Form W-4, and the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator for official guidance.

Weekly vs biweekly vs semimonthly pay

Weekly means 52 pay periods, biweekly means every two weeks and 26 periods, semimonthly means twice each month and 24 periods, and monthly means 12 periods.

Gross pay vs net pay

Gross pay is before deductions and withholding. Net pay, or take-home pay, is what remains after estimated taxes and deductions.

Why can my actual paycheck differ?

Actual withholding can differ because of your employer's payroll method, W-4 details, benefits, year-to-date wages, state rules, garnishments, rounding, and other compensation. This page provides an estimate, not tax, payroll, accounting, or legal advice.

How do pre-tax deductions affect a paycheck?

Pre-tax deductions can reduce federal taxable wages. Some deductions may also be exempt from Social Security and Medicare, while others are not. This MVP lets you identify federal-income-tax and FICA-exempt amounts separately, but it cannot model every benefits plan.
