How to calculate mulch
Multiply length × width × depth after converting depth to feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. For example, 10 ft × 10 ft × 3 in (0.25 ft) requires 25 cubic feet, or about 0.926 cubic yards.
Recommended mulch depth
Many landscaping projects use a depth around 2–4 inches, depending on the material and purpose. Follow local or supplier guidance for your project.
Cubic yards vs bags
Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is sold by volume. The example above needs 12.5 two-cubic-foot bags before extra material, so the purchase quantity is rounded up to 13. This calculator rounds every bag quantity upward and includes a 10% extra-material allowance.
Why estimates vary
Uneven ground, settling, spreading, measurement differences, and the material's actual packed volume can change how much mulch a project uses. Treat the result as a purchasing estimate and check the bag's stated coverage.
