What is a WebP image?

WebP is a modern image format developed for the web. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation while often using less storage than older image formats.

Why convert JPG or PNG to WebP?

Smaller images can make websites load faster and use less bandwidth. WebP can be especially useful for product photos, blog images, screenshots, and other images displayed online.

Is WebP smaller than JPG?

Often, but not always. The result depends on the source image, its existing compression, and the chosen quality. This tool shows the real before-and-after sizes and clearly reports when the WebP is larger.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas in PNG images are preserved when the browser decodes and encodes them correctly. JPG images do not contain transparency.

Does conversion reduce image quality?

This converter uses lossy WebP encoding. Lower quality settings usually create smaller files but may remove visible detail. The default 85% setting is a practical balance for many images.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Selected JPG and PNG images are decoded, converted, measured, and packaged locally in your browser. They are not sent to a Web MultiTools conversion server.

Do modern browsers support WebP?

Yes. Current versions of major browsers support WebP. Some older programs and devices may still prefer JPG or PNG.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP

JPG is widely compatible and works well for photos. PNG is useful for sharp graphics and transparency. WebP can handle both photographic images and transparent graphics while often producing smaller web files.
