Why Does an Email's Reply-To Address Matter?
The From address is what you see as the sender. Reply-To tells your email program where to send your response. Those addresses can be different.
Why legitimate messages use Reply-To
Newsletters may send from an automated platform but direct replies to a support team. Ticketing systems, contact forms, and shared mail services can also use a different Reply-To address for practical reasons.
How scammers can misuse it
A message can display a familiar From name while directing replies to an unrelated account controlled by an attacker. This is useful in invoice fraud, payroll changes, gift-card requests, and other conversation-based scams.
What to compare
Compare the full From and Reply-To domains. Consider whether the difference makes sense for the sender, whether authentication aligns, and whether the message requests money, credentials, or a sensitive account change.
A mismatch is evidence, not proof
Reply-To differences are common in legitimate mail. The mismatch becomes more meaningful when it appears with impersonation, authentication failures, urgency, or an unexpected sensitive request.
Verify high-impact requests using contact information you already trust instead of replying to the questionable message.
